Can CRA fine you if you declare the wrong marital status?

It is important to report the correct marital status on your income tax return because there are certain credits and deductions that are calculated based on your marital status and combined family net income.  If you do not report the correct marital status, you may receive monies that you are not entitled to and will need to pay it back.  Likewise, there may also be funds that you are entitled to that you will not receive due to the incorrect marital status.
