How can I do a couple return as I forgot how I did it last year? If someone could give me step by step instructions to do this?

Need to know if I do one income tax return for the the both of us or two separate ones?

You have to click on "Start a new return" to file a couple return. Here are the steps to file the couple tax return:

  1. Sign in to your TurboTax account
  2. Select Start a new return
  3. Select the TurboTax Online product you wish to use, and indicate how you did your taxes last year
  4. On the Welcome step, select My spouse/partner and me under the question Who are you preparing this return for?
  5. Follow the prompts to enter your personal information. On the What's your marital status? step, select Married or Living Common-law
  6. At Do you want to prepare your returns together?, select Yes
  7. Select Continue and proceed with completing your returns.

Thank you for choosing TurboTax.

Hi Again,

I am using the desktop turbotax version.

I use easy step way of filing.

I start John Doe by transferring data from 2022. I changed he status for married as of jan 2023.

Then I check for filing both.  John and Jane Doe (as married couple for year 2023)

Turbotax does allow me to import Jane Doe (2022)!! How I can import both to file then as couple for 2023!!

Unfortunately, since this is your first year filing as a couple, the other spouse's return is not yet available to be transferred into the return. Next year when both returns have already been done together, the software will be able to transfer the information from the two returns.

Hi Again,

So how I can file for both John and Jane Do as couple? By the way I have acces to Turbo tax 2022 for both as singles!

if not,  should I file each separately and add the second as a spouse and vice versa?

You have to click on "Start a new return" to file a couple return. Here are the steps to file the couple tax return:

  1. Sign in to your TurboTax account
  2. Select Start a new return
  3. Select the TurboTax Online product you wish to use, and indicate how you did your taxes last year
  4. On the Welcome step, select My spouse/partner and me under the question Who are you preparing this return for?
  5. Follow the prompts to enter your personal information. On the What's your marital status? step, select Married or Living Common-law
  6. At Do you want to prepare your returns together?, select Yes
  7. Select Continue and proceed with completing both your returns simultaneously.
  8. Remember, when done, you will need to Netfile the two separate returns.

If you indicated that you used TurboTax to do your return last year, the software will guide you to transfer your information but not your spouse's. The software will only be able to transfer both next year when transferring this spousal return.
