I became separated Feb 2019, now trying to file taxes and she won't give me her income info, SIN or the universal child tax she received. What do I do?

Here's what you can in this situation.

  • When you don’t know your spouse’s income and can’t find out through reasonable means, the CRA recommends that you enter your best estimate.
  • If you do not know her SIN but have filed together in the past as Married or Common-Law, CRA will be able to match the information from previous tax records.
  • Any benefits received for dependant children are from the Canada Child Benefit and not taxable, so no slip is issued and neither of you reports it on your tax return. The Universal Child Care Benefit was eliminated in July 2016, only if a lump sum payment was made for prior years would an RC62 tax slip be issued in 2019
