My daughter is 30Can I claim her as a dependent to get tuition transfer? I live with my mother-in-law. Can I claim her as dependent as well? She is 89 with health problem

TurboTax rejects my daughter and mother-in-law as dependents since they are older than 18. Did the law changed?

  • You will need to enter your daughter as a Dependant if you wish to transfer her Tuition & Education credits to yourself. You won't be eligible for any other credits, and you should prepare her tax return first so you can have the figures needed to complete the Tuition Transfer correctly to you.
  • You may be eligible to claim your Mother-In-Law as a dependant but the rules regarding claiming elderly parents as dependants changed in 2017. The following answer provides more details on this.
