I found some unclaimed medical receipts for 2018 tax year, so refiled the return. Just received notice of assessment from CRA, and the additional expenses do not appear to have been recognized. Upon checking my return, even though an additional medical expense amount was generated, the medical expenses total in the summary is exactly the same as before. No wonder CRA didn't recognize it! What is going on here, and how do I correct it? Thanks.
You will need to file an adjustment request to ensure that the additional medical expenses are added to your income tax return.
The CRA requires that you wait until you’ve received your notice of assessment (NOA) before filing an adjustment. In many cases, the CRA will catch the mismatch and automatically adjust your return for you. So, it’s best to wait for your NOA as you might not even need to file an adjustment.
If you filed your original tax return using CRA’s NETFILE service:
If you printed and mailed your original tax return or are in a situation excluded from ReFILE:
Note: Online editions of TurboTax don’t currently support ReFILE of federal tax returns for residents of Québec.
