We lived apart before march, 2020. We became common law after he moved in (march, as we have children together). It asks if i was married on dec 31, no option for single

If you are preparing your return with your common-law partner, then you must choose either Married or Living common-law. If you were single on Dec 31st of the tax year, then you can't prepare your return at the same time as another person.
