How do I claim deductions for northern residents?

The instructions for claiming deductions for northern residents in TurboTax varies depending on the type of return you're filing. To find out how to claim these deductions, decide whether you're filing a single or joint return and choose the following instructions relevant to you.

  1. Select Find (or the magnifying glass icon) from the menu in TurboTax.
  2. Type northern residents in the Find window.
  3. Select Northern Residents Deduction from the list of results, then Go. The Northern Residents Deduction step appears.
  4. Select [Name] Qualifies where you see the name of the person you're claiming for. The Northern Residents Deduction step refreshes.
  5. Fill out the fields, then select Continue. (Note: Zone A refers to a prescribed northern zone and Zone B refers to a prescribed intermediate zone. To learn more about prescribed zones, visit the CRA website.) The Northern Residents Deduction – Trips step appears.
  6. Fill out the fields, then select Continue. (Note: You can make the travel claim only if your T4 includes an amount in box 32 (other travel) or box 33 (medical travel), or if your T4A includes an amount in box 28 (other travel) or box 116 (medical travel).) The Additional Residency Amount step appears.
  7. If you qualify, enter your information to claim the additional amount.
  8. Select Continue. You have successfully claimed northern residents deductions.
