How do I claim deductions for northern residents?

  1. Select the image of the magnifying glass (or Find) in the upper-right area of TurboTax.
  2. Enter “northern residents” in the Find window.
  3. Select Northern Residents Deduction from the list of results, then select Go.
  4. The Northern Residents Deduction step appears.

  5. Select [Name] Qualifies where you see the name of the person you are claiming for.
  6. The Northern Residents Deduction step refreshes.

  7. Fill out the fields, then select Continue.
  8. Note: Zone A refers to a prescribed northern zone and Zone B refers to a prescribed intermediate zone. To learn more about prescribed zones, visit the CRA website (click here: link).

    The Northern Residents Deduction – Trips step appears.

  9. Fill out the fields, then select Continue.
  10. Note: You can make the travel claim only if your T4 includes an amount in box 32 (other travel) or box 33 (medical travel), or if your T4A includes an amount in box 28 (other travel) or box 116 (medical travel).

    The Additional Residency Amount step appears.

  11. If you qualify, enter your information to claim the additional amount.
  12. Select Continue.

You have successfully claimed northern residents deductions.
