Can I claim a donation to a Church not based in Canada?

I made a cash donation to a church in the Caribbean that my wife belonged to. They gave me a receipt. Can I claim that on my return?

Generally not unless it is a registered charity.  Please see http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/tx/ndvdls/tpcs/ncm-tx/rtrn/cmpltng/ddctns/lns300-350/349/gfts-eng.html

To add more details, the Church in the Caribbean is of the same denomination as the one we go to here in Canada, which is registered with the CRA.

The Church in another country may be of the same denomination, but still may not be registered in Canada.
