Can I claim nursing home accommodation instead of DTC? How can you 0 out line 31600

How to Claim Nursing Home Fees (instead of DTC)

  1. Meet the Criteria: You must have a T2201 form (Disability Tax Credit Certificate) approved by the CRA or a note from a medical practitioner certifying that the individual depends on others for their personal needs due to lack of normal mental/physical capacity.
  2. Claim as Medical Expenses: Enter the full amount paid to the nursing home on Line 33099 (or 33199 for dependants).
  3. Ensure Proper Documentation: Keep a detailed breakdown of the costs, showing they relate to full-time care (accommodation, food, and nursing care).

How to 0 Out Line 31600 in TurboTax Canada

Line 31600 is the Federal Disability Amount. To make this zero while claiming nursing home fees:

  • If you are using TurboTax EasyStep (Online):
    1. Navigate to the Medical Expenses section.
    2. Enter your nursing home fees as a "Nursing Home" expense.
    3. When asked if the person qualifies for the Disability Tax Credit, answer No, or do not check the "Disability amount for self" box.
  • If you are using TurboTax Desktop:
    1. Search for "Disability" using the "Find" tool.
