Can I claim summer camp expenses for my nephew?

My husband and I paid for my nephew's summer camp in July & August 2022. The daycare that runs it has given us the tax receipt since we paid for the expenses. Can I claim this on my taxes for 2022 even if we do not have custody of our nephew? Can't seem to find this topic covered anywhere. It's a fairly substantial amount, so it would be great if we could claim this.

Unfortunately, as you are not the parent or guardian of the child this credit will not be able to be claimed.

However if the receipt was in the parents name, they could have claimed this credit as the child is their dependent.

As your case is without precedence we would suggest you contact the CRA (Canada Revenue Agency) at  for clarification.
