Can I deduct "religious education" donations (with receipts) on both my Federal and Quebec tax returns? If only federal, then how can I do this using Turbo Tax?

Hello,

If you received an official donation receipt from any registered charities, you could claim the charitable tax credit on your federal T1 return. You could also claim it to your Quebec TP1return if the donation was made to one of the following donees:

  • a registered charity;
  • a registered Canadian amateur athletic association;
  • a registered Québec amateur athletic association;
  • a recognized political education organization; or
  • a registered journalism organization.

It really depends on whether the donee is a registered charity and whether you received an official donation receipt for the tax year.

If so, you could go to "Find" and search for "Donation Profile", check box for "Donation receipts made to a qualified charitable organization not reported on T-slip" and go through the questions to enter the name of the charitable organization and the amount of donation. If your province of residence is Quebec, the qualified donation amount will flow to your Quebec TP1 return as well.

Hope this helps!
