When you pay into a Private Health Service or Extended Medical/Dental plan, the premiums can be claimed on your tax return as a "medical expense". If Box 85 of your T4 is filled in, you only need to enter it there and the amount will post automatically. Do not enter it twice.

  • If Box 85 is not filled in, using TurboTax Online go to the Deductions Tab > Medical Expenses Profile > check Medical Expenses > Continue and "Enter New Medical Expense". Choose "Premiums Paid to Private Health Plan" as the type of expense.
  • If Box 85 is not filled in, using TurboTax CD/Download go to Deductions & Credits > Medical Expenses Profile > check Private Medical Plans & Other Claims > Continue to the "Private Medical Plans & Other Claims" page and make your entries there.
