Claiming Dependent

I am attempting to claim my son as a dependent as he has tuition credits that can be transferred to me. Going through the online navigation, I was asked if his net income was zero. He worked part-time before going away for school. Does he file his own return and I claim he has a net income of zero? Thank you.

He needs to file his return first and if he worked part time his income will not be zero. He will report his income and  claim his tuition credits on his return  first and then report that he will be transferring  tuition credits to you. Turbo tax will calculate how much he is allowed to transfer and   you will need this information form his return before you can complete your and accept transfer.
