I'd like to file a 2016 return for someone who hasn't filed in 4 years. Can I file just this year?

The form suggests filing past years first.  Is this mandatory?   i.e.  Would the CRA reject online filing if earlier years aren't done first?

Yes you must provide the previous years - with this years. Here is a link with our past years software.

Depending on how many years that haven't been file you may need to send all the persons income tax past and presend by mail.

Thanks.  I think it's four years, including this year, since she's filed.

If all her information is up to date with Revenu Canada then you can Netfile all her taxes. So long as they are all sent in. If her address, phone number, marital status and other personal information has changed in the past 4 years and hasn't been updated with Revenu Canada then you will need to send all her tax returns in by mail.
