I was in Canada with a work visa and left in June 2021 - How do I file taxes?

Hi All,

I was in Canada with a work visa since Oct 2018 and permanently left in June of 2021 (I also closed all my bank accounts). I moved to the US a couple months later and got married in October 2021. I only earned a few dollars from a high-yield savings account in the US, but no other income. My wife is a US citizen and never lived or worked in Canada, but she did earn US income.

I got my T4, T5, T5008 and T3(CAN) as well as my 1099-INT (US).

How should I file my taxes? Am i considered a non-resident/resident/deemed resident, etc. for 2021?
How do I include my wife in my taxes since she is not Canadian or worked in Canada?

Anything else I should keep in mind when filing my taxes?

TIA

What is my residency status?
If you left Canada in June, your residency status would be a non-resident as of that date.
Since you lived in Canada on a work visa, I assume there is a country outside of Canada in which you had otherwise normally lived. Additionally, you closed your Canadian bank accounts and you lived in Canada for less than 183 days (January - June) within the 2021 tax year. Both of these signify that you are a non-resident for income tax purposes.

Information on Residency Status, as per Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).

How should I file my taxes?
As a non-resident, you must file a special tax return– Form 5013-R T1 (Income Tax and Benefit Return for Non-Residents and Deemed Residents of Canada).
Depending on the type of income you earn, you may need to file additional forms.

The Canadian income you received within the 2021 tax year should be reported on your Canadian income tax return. As a non-resident, this income would generally be subject to Part XIII tax or Part I tax.

How do I include my wife in my taxes if she is not Canadian and did not earn Canadian income?
Your spouse’s income from January to June, while you were living in Canada, should be recorded under “Net World Income” on page 1 of your tax return. This includes income from all sources inside and outside of Canada during your period of residency within that tax year.

Information on entering spouse's information, as per Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).
