Inaccurate Information in TurboTax Hub Article: 6 Things You Should Know Before Filing a Loved One’s Final Tax Return

I would like to inform you that the information contained in the 6 Things You Should Know Before Filing a Loved One's Final Tax Return article on TurboTax Hub is inaccurate for the 2022 tax year: 6 Things You Should Know Before Filing a Loved One’s Final Tax Return | 2022 TurboTax® Canada Tips (intuit.ca)

Both the CRA and Revenu Quebec guides on filing the final return for a deceased person clearly state that both can be filed electronically/online using NETFILE so long as only a principal filing is submitted and no additional filings (e.g. a trust filing) are submitted.

Please correct the article and refer readers to the appropriate reference material for 2022: Revenu Québec- Guide to Filing the Income Tax Return of a Deceased Person (revenuquebec.ca) and T4011 Preparing Returns for Deceased Persons - Canada.ca

Thank you for your feedback, we will pass it on to be reviewed as the Canada Revenue Agency's about Netfile eligibility lists a restriction to deceased returns as seen below.

Other restrictions

The following is a list of specific situations that prevent you from filing a tax return through the NETFILE service:

  • Your tax return was discounted by a third party
  • You are considered a deemed resident (that is, you don’t have to pay provincial or territorial tax)
  • You are filing a tax return for an individual who died in 2022 or 2023

Thank you for choosing TurboTax.
