Newcomer

Hello,

I need some advice regarding filing tax for the first time. I migrated to Canada as a permanent resident mid-November 2019 & have not earned any income in Canada for the tax-period. Please advice on the steps to go about filing tax-returns as a unemployed newcomer.

1) As a first-time, do I have to print and post the tax-returns?

2) Do I need to register with CRA My Account separately, before using TurboTax?

3) What documents (other than my SIN#) would I need?

Thanks, Amit.

Hi Amit, Welcome to Canada! As a first time filer, you will need to print and mail your return. You do not need to create a CRA account to use TurboTax, however, it is a good idea to create a CRA account for efficiency and future benefits. In addition to your SIN, date of arrival and income earned prior to coming to Canada. Also, have your banking details to enter for direct deposit.
