Received payment for writing articles for an American magazine - how to claim?

I received two separate payments for writing articles for a magazine. There are no income slips or anything, they simply sent me cheques in USD that I cashed at my bank.

What option should I select on the Income & work related expenses page? Foreign under employed (the magazine was basically freelance, no relation to my actual employer). Or self-employed? Or use the tips/casual labour option?

When I put in the amounts, should it be the US value, or the Canadian one? Do I need to consider the exchange rates?

You can enter the amount on the Foreign Income slip. To do so in TurboTax Online:

  • Select Find (or the magnifying glass icon) from the top right
  • In the Find window, type in foreign and then choose “Foreign Income” from the list. Then click “Go”.
  • On the “Foreign Income - Summary” page, click “Enter New foreign income for [Your Name]”.
  • Input your information, then click “Continue” to save.

Enter in only Canadian amounts.
