What does this mean? "Once your return has been processed, the CRA will send you a notice of assessment in the mail" Is a notice of assessment my cheque?

I am not signed up for direct deposit. The wording here sounds misleading and doesn't sound like a notice of assessment includes my actual refund

If you are not registered for direct deposit, and are expecting a refund, then a cheque will accompany your notice of assessment.  The Notice of Assessment is showing what CRA officially accepts for your tax return, including any changes they may have made.
