What exactly am I paying for if I have to mail my return to the CRA myself???

You are paying to use the software. The software fills in the forms, does calculations, and checks for errors for you. If you are using TurboTax Free (and have not added +PLUS or upgraded), then you aren’t even paying. You just need to “confirm” your order before filing.

FYI: The CRA offers all the tax forms on their website for free, if you would rather do everything for yourself.
