Should the 2018 T4A box 28 show as Self Employment Income in the year over year comparison when in 2017 box 28 was Other Income?

Getting started

Alberta Blue Cross has reported health benefit payments in T4A box 28 for several years, which equated to employed “other income”.  There is an error in Turbo Tax 2018, where the same field now translates to Self Emplyment income.

Getting started

"Other Income" for tax purposes, is "Self-Employment" income from your T4A box 28.

  • T4A box 28 is reported on line 130 of your tax return: "Use this line to report taxable income that has not been or should not be reported anywhere else on the return. In the space provided on line 130 of your return, specify the type of income you are reporting."

Getting started

T4A Box 28 was reported from Alberta Blue Cross for health benefit payments, not self employment income.  The same form and box was entered in 2017 and it showed as “other income”.  I think this is an error in 2018, which is preventing me from filing.

Getting started

@colinjclark1 - please see revised answer!  You may want to contact your employer, as this box is not used for insurance payments, it is income not reported anywhere else, which puts it in the Self-Employment category for tax purposes.
