My child is 16, and has a T4A for a $5,000 scholarship. He has no other income. Can I claim that on my own tax return, or do I need to submit one for him?

Getting started

Anyone with enough income to have a tax balance owing or who meets the criteria for filing is required by CRA to file a tax return, even if they are younger than 18. However, even people who don’t have a tax balance owing may still benefit from filing a return.

Getting started

Do not include his scholarship in your income; there is no reason for him to file as there will be no tax owing on the scholarship.
