Bought 2018 download and cant get my 2017 taxes from online to transfer. I saved PDF copy but when I try to transfer and hit browse the folder they are in appears empty

You can’t transfer info from TurboTax Online into TurboTax Cd/Download. https://turbotax.community.intuit.ca/replies/2961935

.tax files were only used to NETFILE returns back before the CRA improved the NETFILE system. Now you no longer need to download/upload .tax files, TurboTax will send the tax info directly to the CRA if you file online.
