Do I declare overseas income from UK?

I'm about to file my tax return for 2017 . I'm here on a working Visa and have never filed before. Before I arrived in Canada at the end of Jan 2017 I received my last pay from my Uk employer in the same January.

Do I have to declare that amount? Before or after tax amount? And can I claim tax back through the Canada Revenue for that income?

Thanks in advance

You will first need to determine your "residency status" before filing your Canadian tax return. It's best to speak with the International Tax Services dept for advice on your status, entry date and what income you need to report on this first tax return.

International Tax & Non-Resident Enquiries:    https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/corporate/contact-information/international-tax-non-resident...

Then TurboTax will guide you through step by step during the initial interview process on how to enter this income.

  • Answer "Yes" on the page "Did Your Canadian Residency Change", and a section appears that allows you to enter your income earned prior to your entry to Canada.
    • The income earned prior to your entry into Canada will not affect your tax return, but may affect any Federal or Provincial benefits or credits you are entitled to.
