Investors and rental owners

This first part is assuming that your mother resides in Ontario

If she owned her own home until she moved to the nursing home, then she can claim the property taxes prorated for the ten months she lived in the home.  She can also claim the rent paid for the two months in 2015.  If your aunt did own her own home and sold it, she should make sure she has handy the Statement of Accounts from the lawyer, it would state how much of the property taxes your mother was responsible for.

If your mother rented her home before moving into the nursing home, she would want a letter from the landlord stating she resided in her home from Jan 1 to the date she moved into the nursing home, and how much was paid for rent.

If your mother has also applied for the Disability Tax Credit, and it has been approved with CRA, then she can claim the full cost of living in the nursing home as a medical expense.  This expense may be claimed regardless of what province your mother resides in.
