After you get your Notice of Assessment from your first return, you'll be able to sign up for MY Account.
This CRA website tells you how to sign up for My Account: https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/e-services/cra-login-services/cra-user-password-help-faqs/registration-process-access-cra-login-services.html#hlp1a
Thanks for the information! However in my case, this is my first time filing taxes and I didn’t file anything in the previous years. What can I do in this situation if I don’t have a notice of assessment?
You can't sign up for a CRA MyAccount until after you file a return for the first time and get the notice of assessment.
Oh okay got it! So what could be the next step for me? Should I file my taxes through any service like [another company] and then later wait for my NOA to make a CRA account? I again appreciate you giving response to this.
This is the forum for TurboTax, we have some pretty darn good tax software right here: https://turbotax.intuit.ca/tax/software/online
Oh sounds good! I was actually exploring all options that is why i mentioned another company. I’m actually new to filing taxes especially by myself. I have everything ready in turbo tax as well to be submitted. I just wanted to know if I submit my taxes through turbotax now and get a NOA in a few weeks…. I’d then be able to make my new CRA account right?
Perfect! I really thank you for your assistance! Peace✌️
@michaelmoreton You can't sign up for CRA My Account if you have never filed a return before. You will be able to do so once you've filed your first return and received your Notice Of Assessment.
Hello, I'm having the same issue. This is my first time doing this and can't create a personal CRA account. I've filled my first return and mailed it to them over a month ago and never heard back. How long does this process usually takes?
It can take up to 6 weeks to hear back from them. Contact the CRA at 1 (800) 959-8281 as they can give you an update on your return.
Thank you for choosing TurboTax.
Were you able to successfully file taxes for the first time through turbo tax without NOA
What is your question? If this is the first time filing a Canada Revenu income tax return, click on the "FILE" section and continue and choose Print and Mail Return.
Thank you for choosing TurboTax.
As a TPA, I've had a few people who didn't have their CRA account set up. I was directing them to CRA to set it up but as the season has progressed I've learned that isn't required to file their current year taxes using full service. This is applicable to young canadians or new canadians filing for the first time.
Is an account is required to designate a representative? YES. That said, the representative aspect for full service is related to accessing RAC and the AFR. Full service can still process the return, checking off first time filer. Once that return is filed, a notice of assessment will be received and Full Service will then be able to process an authorization for next year or other prior years returns.
This DOES NOT preclude new filers from using full service but it DOES preclude TPA from filing an authorization or checking RAC.
Directing cx to Canada.ca to register with CRA is not necessary PRIOR TO FILING but advise cx to create their account after they get their first notice of assessment.
Add notes for TE and tell TE to indicate first time filer, years to be filed if more than one and whether or not they have slips for at least one of the years.
Having at least one tax item in one year allows FS TE to file a first time filer return and once that is done, they will be able to authorize for other returns and download from CRA.
Are you working on the TurboTax Live team? If yes, please let me know and I will advise of the next step.
I will send you the info- thanks for letting me know 🙂
Thanks. I got thinking, could they file a nil return for a prior year even if they were not here. That would trigger an assessment notice and then they'd be able to set up their account. If they are coming to FS, they have a sin number and since they are first time filers, seems like they want someone else to do it. Any other options for them to get FS?
FIRST TIME FILERS
Whether they are new to Canada or just filing their first return, some cx will not have a CRA account. This DOES NOT preclude them from using full service but it DOES preclude TPA from filing an authorization or checking RAC.
