To move your old tax data files to your new computer, please follow the steps below:

  • Install TurboTax Desktop on your new computer.

  • Connect a drive or other portable device to your old computer and copy/move your old tax data file to it. (Recommended: Copy instead of dragging the files)

  • After successful copying, disconnect/eject the portable device and connect it to your new computer.

  • Once connected, browse your device and select the copied tax return files. Drag them to your desktop (or easy-to-find location), then release the mouse key and copy (instead of moving) the file.

  • On TurboTax Desktop, open the copied old tax file by browsing to ensure it is not corrupted

  • If your file is corrupted, delete it from your device and the new computer.

  • After deletion, repeat the above steps from the beginning.

Caution: You might want to delete the file from your portable device for security purposes. Please don't email it to yourself. Email isn't secure either.
