I replaced my hard drive and re-installed prior year versions of the TurboTax software. How can I update those software versions so that I can open the old tax returns?

I need information from older returns to accurately prepare the 2022 return.  For example, 2015 Turbotax.  I would also appreciate if I can update the prior years' versions too.

You can download older versions of TurboTax CD/download edition (2018 to 2021) here: Where can I download the CD/download edition of TurboTax?

Here is the link for TurboTax CD/Download 2016: https://intuitglobal.intuit.com/downloads/CanadaTax/2016/dls/TurboTax2016_Bld8004_May18.exe

Here is the link for TurboTax CD/Download 2017: https://intuitglobal.intuit.com/downloads/CanadaTax/2017/dls/TurboTax2017_Build9008.exe

If you no longer have the licence code for these products, please contact our phone support team at 1-888-829-8608.

Unfortunately, we no longer support products for 2015 or earlier.

Thank you.

Are these links to the updated versions of the software for the respective years?  I mean, each year there would be a few updates to the software during the filing season and are the links point to those updated versions of the original versions of the CD?

I do have the original CD's of all the years and installed them in my new hard drive.  However, they are unable to open the saved returns as they were created/saved with the updated versions.

Thanks.

The versions we have to download on our website are the most up to date versions, with all the updates applied.

I know that this thread is from last year, but I too have run into the same problem.

I had to replace my hard drive with an SSD, Windows 10 and sadly, Microsoft's own Backup and Restore software, can create the IMAGE (from old drive) but it fails when trying to restore it to the new drive.

This process works perfectly with Windows 7, but not Windows 10.

Therefore, rather than a nice and easy reimage to the new SSD, I had to reinstall Win10 from scratch!

So now I have to install several years of TurboTax.  I did find MOST of the CDS with their license codes, but not all.  Sure, they are here somewhere, but I just can't find them as yet.

So I wish that TT would have an "archive" link where all the old versions are listed and we just clicked on the year we'd like to download.

But the other problem too, is that while I thought that the keys are stored on our accounts (since it says that on one of the packages or on the site) IT IS NOT!

As for 2023, I do have that and the key, so no issue and it installed just fine and I was able to re-enter the key.

However, when I click to "register" it, I was shocked at just how much information... PERSONAL INFORMATION that Intuit wants us to enter... INFO THAT IS NOT VITAL TO RUNNING SOFTWARE!

It should be nothing more than our name and email.... NOT our address and other PRIVATE information.

As a certified computer engineer, I KNOW that websites and their servers are often hacked!  So I REFUSE to put all that info on a site!

PLEASE MAKE THIS EASIER FOR US, WITHOUT trying to gather all... ALL of our personal info!!!

It would also be a good idea to let PAYING CUSTOMERS know where on the hard drive that the license key is stored, so that, with the old drive, we can obtain it so that we can re-activate on the new drive.

Right now, I can't find a few disks with their keys, so this is a problem.

Especially for 2022, which isn't long ago.  I can still access them on the old drive... but can't find the key to transfer to the new drive.

Just to clarify, are you using a new computer or just changed the drive? If you were able to open your return on your old drive, we can then assist you.

Thank you for choosing TurboTax

I too am having trouble. First, I cannot find the 2018 software on that link and second, all my activations license codes for 2015 thru 2017 do not seem to work. Yet, from 2019 onwards they do?

I had a similar issue to the original poster -- hard drive failure necessitated I rebuild the PC and needed to reinstall TurboTax. I have the install CDs but they won't activate as the server they are trying to access seems inaccessible by any software prior to 2019 and I need to have at least seven years so that is back to 2016 but ideally, 2015 as a minimum (for carry forwards etc.)

Help appreciated.

@srgordon You can download TurboTax 2018 from this link: https://turbotax.intuit.ca/tax-software/download-skus/turbotax-2018.jsp

As of December 2024, we no longer support versions of TurboTax Desktop prior to 2018 as we no longer sell them. Updates and authentication services are no longer available for those years.

If you need information from an older return and don't have the PDF archives saved for your records, you can get info through the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA)'s My Account service, or call them 1-800-959-8281 to request the info.

Please note that the CRA generally only requires records and supporting documents to be kept for a period of six years from the end of the last tax year they relate to. You can read more on their website: https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/businesses/topics/keeping-records/where-keep-your-records-long-request-permission-destroy-them-early.html

Thank you for the quick response! I downloaded the 2018 version but it too failed on activation with the key I have?

hopefully you can help me getting it activated but generally, why would software I have paid for and activated no longer be viable for me to use? I understand Intuit may not offer support for it but if I had it installed / activated it would keep working at its last known state, so why am I prevented from using it when it is something I have already paid for? If even to print the returns or such... ?

@srgordon We understand your concern, but, as my colleague Susan explained previously, we no longer support those years, provide update or installers, as CRA wants 6 years saved, 2024 to 2019.

To get a printable version of your returns, if you need information from an older return and don't have the PDF archives saved for your records, you can get info through the CRA's My Account service, or call them 1-800-959-8281 to request the info.

Thank you for choosing TurboTax.

Thank you again for the speedy response.

Firstly, I am not sure why I was provided the link to the 2018 software if I could not activate it/use it -- a complete waste of time?

Secondly, what CRA wants or does not want is irrelevant -- I paid for the software and should be able to use it. UNLESS it is stated somewhere that if needing to be re-activated, it can only be done for the five most recent years and I agreed to it. I do not recall this in the prior versions but certainly not the 2023 version. To me, it seems odd that a company would allow the activated software to run uninterrupted BUT if I have to recreate my install -- of software I paid for -- I would be prevented to do so. I understand not offering software support but disallowing purchased software to be used? That seems excessively arbitrary to me and not documented anywhere that I can find.

@srgordon 2018 is available on our website, on the prior years page.

If you have the 2018 License code, you can download it with this link, but because it is a software earlier then 2021, you can experience a compatibility issue with Windows 11. You can find solution on this Forum link.

If you don't have your License code and it's only to print or save in PDF a copy of your 2018 return, you can use the Free version available on this page.

Thank you, I mentioned prior I have the "Installation key Code" and CD. Actually, for the versions going back decades but I assumed updates would not be available so wanted the updated version from your site.

Downloading 2018 from the link provided prior, and trying to activate it yields an error (2019 works), and suggests I call a number to activate over the phone vs over the internet but that number has a message saying go online as the number is no longer in use.  I am on Windows 10 not 11 (and I know that is soon to be End Of Life) but that's a problem for another time.

I have the software via your downloads but the activation fails when I enter my license code. The software without being able to use it, is pointless. How can I activate it?

Unfortunately, phone activation is discontinued but we suggest you to contact Product support team by phone and report the issue.

Thank you for choosing TurboTax.

Just fyi for anyone else in a similar situation, I did call support and they indicated there is currently an issue with activating 2018 which they are working on, and confirmed 2017 and prior can no longer be activated on a re-install. Not sure I see the logic in not allowing me to re-activate software I paid for when had I not had the harddisk failure, it would have merrily kept working, but that is a fight for another day....

I must say, response time on this forum and the phone support was quick and responsive!

All this is motivating me to move on to another company that provides tax software.

I've used TurboTax for many years.

I have not found their support to be great and now THIS!

What was the point of creating an account then?  (rhetorical).

On any other site, including Amazon, when you have an account, it retains all your information (keys, orders, etc) until we decide to remove it.

So I think it's time to move on to a different option.

Even with these posts.  I tried to stop notifications and it doesn't work!

Even clicking on UNsubscribe has not worked.

I do not like companies that take on the authoritarian method, so yeah, time to move on.

@srgordon For TurboTax 2018 re-installation, make sure your internet connection is good and if you have any anti-virus installed, please turn that off before installing TurboTax Desktop and you can turn that back on after the installation. If the issue persist please contact Product Support so we can investigate this issue for you.

You can call customer support at 1-888-829-8608.

We are available Monday through Friday 9 AM to 6 PM ET for English and French support.

We are closed on the weekends for now.

Thank you for choosing TurboTax.

I did call Customer Support and they were the ones who told be there are activation issues for 2018 version and they are working on it. Activation for 2019 and newer worked no problem.

Thank you for the update on your situation. Yes, our teams are working on this issue with TurboTax Desktop 2018 activation.

We are pretty sure Product support tried this with you, but, at this moment, what we can do is to ask you to verify your Internet connection and if you have an antivirus. If yes, please try to deactivate the antivirus and try again. If the issue persists, be sure to turn back on the antivirus and call Product support (something you already did).

As soon as we have an update about this issue, we will post here.

Thank you for your patience.

Where can I buy a Key for the 2017 version of the software?

@Vast57 Unfortunately, as of December 2024 we no longer sell products for 2017 or earlier, but you can download the forms from the CRA here: https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/forms-publications/tax-packages-years.html

You can see what we have for past years here: https://turbotax.intuit.ca/tax/software/prior-year-taxes

Thank you for choosing TurboTax.

it has been a couple of weeks more now, any ETA on when TurboTax 2018 can be activated?

Unfortunately, the instructions we have are the same we already shared in this chat.

1- verify your Internet connection is good
2- try to deactivate the antivirus
3- try re-open de software to activate

If the issue persists, be sure to turn back on the antivirus and call Product support. They have ongoing investigations about this problem, they will be able to screenshare with you and send your situation to investigation.

Thank you for your patience.

Yes, and as I have repeatedly mentioned, I have attempted all your suggestions and am awaiting Intuit to resolve the issue on their end or provide me a code I can use to simulate the phone activation so enable me to use the 2018 version I purchased. I suppose, I would be open to a refund of the purchase price if the software I bought is no longer able to work as it was never a time limited license.
