I used the FREE software but when I try to file my return with CRA the software asks me to pay money to Turbo Tax. I thought this software was free?

Why does the FREE software ask for money when I try to file my return with CRA?

Our TurboTax Online Free is eligible per return per account. It is available for a simple tax return that covers the following:

  • Covers COVID-19 benefits and repayments
  • Import slips directly from the CRA
  • Import last year’s TurboTax info
  • Covers employment, unemployment, and pension income
  • Handles RRSP contributions
  • Claim dependent and student credits

As well, it can also involve additional benefits and credits like the age amount, social assistance, and disability amounts.

Maybe your return is more complicated. Items like claim donations, interest-based income, investment and employment expenses, or anything related to self-employment, may require more expertise. If you are reporting more information on your tax return, TurboTax will ask you to upgrade to TurboTax Deluxe, TurboTax Premier or TurboTax Self-Employed which you will be charged for the service provided.
