I was receiving trillium payments last year based off my 2017 taxes. I left Canada midway through 2018, and they're now asking for it back.

For full details - I lived in Canada on 2 year temp visa. When filing my 2017 taxes, I was told I'm eligible for Trillium benefits which would be paid through 2018. They've now asked me to pay them back, as i wasn't in the country during the payments.

I thought the payments were purely based on my 2017 income? Or is it true that you need to be present in the country when receiving them, even though it's based on income when I was in Canada?

Yes, you do need to be residing in Canada while you are receiving the Ontario Trillium benefit payments.  For more information, you may want to contact the Canada Revenue Agency at 1 800 959 8281.
