If you've entered an amount from any of the boxes on the slips listed here, you have what the CRA says is self-employment or business income:
If you entered an amount in any of these boxes, TurboTax will ask additional questions to report it as business income or to automatically add the info to Form T2125: Statement of Business Activities for you. You might be asked to enter your province of self-employment, business address, industry code, fiscal period, or to complete a self-employment statement.
Thank you for choosing TurboTax.
This did not answer the question. I have the same problem. I am being told to upgrade but I'm not self-employed and I don't want to upgrade.
If you don't have anything that Brenda listed above, then please contact our phone support team at 1-888-829-8608 as they will be better able to assist you.
I have gone through our tax several times to ensure the boxes are not ticked to reflect self employment. One of us is 98! Time for a different tax programme.

I spoke to an operator today and she told me that yes, I do need to upgrade even though I am not self-employed! Extremely frustrating! I will be using different tax software this year.
turbo tax sucks they only want more money from you every year. now they take rental properties.
I am frustrated just reading this. I have used Turbotax for years and never had such an issue. This year and last year we had the simplest taxes to file. And for some reason this year it is not allowing me to move forward.... with just one T4????? Because I'm self employed? And I can't get help since I didn't pay for the 'live help'?? I have a single T4!!!!
If information was transferred from a prior year that was in the list below, this could be forcing an upgrade.
There might be donations in box 46 of a T4 or Employee-paid premiums (medical) in box 85 of a T4 which would require an upgrade to allow a claim for additional credits not included in the free version. Please see the list below enumerating what is or is not included in the free version.
