My children rent during the school year and received a T4. They filed their own taxes. Should I claim them as dependants?

They attend university., and rent during the school year.

Hi there! Yes you should enter your children's information as dependants into the software and it should help you find the deductions and credits you're eligible for. Please also refer to this article for more information on how parents can maximize their return

Hi! For claiming a dependent in Canada, there are couple things you need to verify:

Age Limits

  1. Children aged 0-18 years: You can claim a dependent if they are your biological or adopted child under the age of 18.
  2. Children aged 18-24 years: If the dependent is over 18 but under 24, they must be enrolled in post-secondary education to be eligible.

Income Limits

  1. Generally, your dependent must have an income lower than the basic personal amount set by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), which adjusts annually. For 2025, this amount is expected to be around $15,000 CAD, but you should check the CRA website for the most current information.
