Although you may not be self employed, TurboTax is taking extra steps to ensure you have access to the right tools and support specific to your tax needs.
If you've entered an amount from any of the boxes on the slips listed here, you have what the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) considers to be self-employment or business income:
T4 slip: box 81, 82 or 83
T4A slip: box 20 or 48
T4A slip: box 28 and you selected Yes to the question Does the income declared in Box 028 consist of fees collected for services you provided? in TurboTax Online (needs to say NO to indicate no self-employment)
T3 slip: box 24 (foreign business income)
Thank you for choosing TurboTax.
Thanks @Manjind, this is helpful, however, I have checked all our T4s, T4As (we have none) and T3s and *none* of the boxes you listed have any income in them. Please advise how to get back to the "Deluxe" product. I am not self-employed. Thanks.
@sccollin Unfortunately, once you have upgraded or added features to your TurboTax return, there is no way to downgrade or remove the extra features. You would need to create a new return to go back to the original product.
To start a new return in TurboTax Online, select “Start a New Return” from under “My Returns” in the top left corner. Once you have started your new return, you can select “View All Returns” from under “My Returns”. Then delete the unwanted return by clicking the Trash Can 🗑 next to it or “Delete” under the return’s name.
Ok, and how do I avoid having the same thing happen again? I never "upgraded" - it was done to me.
You will need to start a new return and it will advise you when it will upgrade unless you see a lock beside where you enter an amount then it will upgrade because you need it.
Thank you for choosing TurboTax.
