What happens to my employment expense amounts in TurboTax?

With many employees working from home due to the COVID-19 pandemic, more tax filers are claiming employment expenses on their returns. If you’re a salaried or commission employee working from home due to the pandemic or otherwise, you may be eligible to claim employment expenses. 

Certain employment expenses, such as home office expenses, can be used to reduce your income and taxes owing, but they can’t create a refund. Any excess expense amounts can be transferred to future years and claimed against income from the same employment. 

TurboTax automatically carries the remaining expenses forward if they exceed your employment income. To see the carry forward amount, use the Find feature in TurboTax to locate your Transfer for Next Year Summary. The amount will appear as a non-capital loss carry forward.
