Are non-residents of Canada, with no sources of Canadian income, required to pay Canadian income tax?

My wife and I have been non-residents of Canada for the entirety of 2013. We have been living and working in Australia and paying Australian income tax. We have no sources of Canadian income.

Are non-residents of Canada, with no sources of Canadian income, required to pay Canadian income tax?

As Canada taxes on residence, for the most part, rather than citizenship, and since you have no income in Canada, you should not need to file a Canadian return.

What if a non-resident DOES earn income from a Canadian company, for services rendered in their home country as a sole proprietor, would this person be responsible for paying Canadian taxes on that income?

If the Canadian company is not withholding taxes that you would like to get back, you should be able to report it as world income on your own income tax in your own country.

To the original question, if you have no Canadian income for a given tax year, you do not need to file a Canadian return. If you do have income, and your Canadian company knows you're a "foreigner" and withheld taxes accordingly, then you don't have to either, but it's possible that they didn't withhold and you might be required (at least this is what a CRA rep told me).
