Claiming rental expenses while property was empty in between tenants

I have a rental property that was vacant for almost 8 months before we ended up selling the house. During the time it was empty, can I still claim the monthly expenses( mortgage interest, utilities, insurance )that was incurred?  We had made attempts to rent the property but could not find a suitable tenant.

As long as you can prove that you have made reasonable attempts to rent your property then yes you can claim all of these expenses.

Situated under the Income tab then Rental Properties.

Tips:

  • Rental Expenses must be claimed in the year they were incurred.
  • You cannot deduct the mortgage payments, only the interest paid on it.
