Under the Canadian income tax system, your income tax obligations to Canada are based on your residency status. You need to know your residency status before you can know what your tax responsibilities and filing requirements to Canada are.
You are a non-resident for income tax purposes if you:
- normally, customarily, or routinely live in another country and are not considered a resident of Canada OR you are a non-resident for income tax purposes if you:
- You live outside Canada throughout the tax year
- You stay in Canada for less than 183 days in the tax year
Refer to this CRA link: Determining your residency status
If you are a non-resident, you need to print and mail your return; it cannot be electronically filed.
