I don't have the items listed (ie. "sold stocks, bonds...; sold home" etc.) but insists I need to upgrade to Premier service. Is there a glitch in your system?

Please be aware that removing the check mark will also mean that you are not going to be asked about your sales of stocks , bonds, etc, and will also not allow you to enter in capital gains from those sales.

If you truly did sell stocks and bonds, and they are not reported on a T-Slip, you will need to check the box you had, and upgrade to the Premier version.

Post back if you need further assistance.

I tried to reset but it didn't help. Can someone at TurboTax reset for me..? This is annoying.

I tried resetting the underlying questions per the second answer and this did not work either.  If this can't be fixed, I will have to take my business to another tax software vendor.

I am having the same issue - changing the answer is not working.  Turbotax, what's the deal?

Did you sell any stocks or bonds that are on a T-Slip? If you have checked the box for "sold stocks, bonds...; sold home" etc." and then unchecked it, please check to see if you have checked any boxes underneath that Sold stocks checkbox. If you have Rental Income, you would need to upgrade.

No, the answer to the question is no and also no to all the more specific questions listed below; I also have no rental income.  It still says I need to upgrade.

Do you have Self Employment Income or expenses?

If the check boxes are truly all blank, and none of the upgrade reasons are a part of your return, please contact our Customer Care team to get a discount code to pay for the upgrade amount. I don't want you to spend too much time trying to discover what is causing the upgrade. Call our team at 1-888-829-8608 (Choose option#2 or 4 on the phone menu).

Post back if you still need assistance after getting the upgrade code.

Thanks.

I have the exact same problem. I have checked that all the boxes are unchecked. I even went back and set everything to no - as in no employment income, nothing of anything and it still says I need to upgrade. In the summary that precedes the upgrade screen it even shows that I have nothing, right before telling me small kittens will be hurt if I do not upgrade! Can I email to get codes? Are you going to fix this? I am sure lots of people are simply giving up and going with UFile.

Hi Chris - I cannot replicate the issue you are describing, unless I accept the upgrade, then try to go back. If that is the case, and it shows you are in the Premier/Home&Business version, click the Tools menu and select Return Manager, then create a new return. If it still requires you to upgrade, then by all means email me to get a code to cover the upgrade costs. tax_support@intuit.com

I just went in again and I still have the same problem. The only way to fix it was delete the return and start over. When I do that, answer the questions the same way. I am allowed to continue. Question: I exercised stock options in 2014, which is what triggered me to answer a question and get into the upgrade issue. Just to clarify, you surely do not have to upgrade just to file a return that includes the exercising of a stock option?

Hi Chris - Were the stock options captured on a slip, or do you need to enter the amounts manually? I'm just trying to figure out what was checked off to trigger the upgrade.

Seems everyone is having the same issue. I originally ticked interest not covered on a T slip and the went back and unticked it. Cannot let me get through to standard. I don't need to upgrade. None of the fixes work. I've used Standard every year and have a simple tax return. Seems like Intuit are trying to force people into upgrading. There should at least be an option to decline the upgrade. Shame on you Intuit!

@swallowswing - I've tried to replicate this, but unless a box is checked off, the software always lets me go on in the return. Email me at tax_support@intuit.com. I will provide you, and anyone else on this thread who needs it, with a discount code to cover the costs of the upgrade. Go ahead and accept the upgrade and continue on with the tax return so you don't have to keep waiting. Just don't pay yet.

That way you can use TurboTax, transfer your tax data from last year, and have access to our Live Tax Advice service, all for the cost of the Standard return you have always used. We've heard it loud and clear from our loyal returning customers, and we're taking the right steps to earn our customers trust back.

I look forward to helping you.

Clint, does this also apply to interest earned on bank accounts? It hardly seems fair for TurboTax to demand that we upgrade to your premier version at double the price, all to enter one line on the tax form.

Thanks for the feedback, msalcioglu. I have passed this exact question to our product managers, as it came up the other day as well. The upgrade does currently apply to Banking Interest. We will review the triggers surrounding the Bank Interest portion of the interview to ensure the upgrade would actually benefit users with that specific income not reported on a slip. I'll post back with more details as they come available.

Thanks again.

I'm also being told to upgrade for my son because it says he had RRSP contributions or income from casual labour--neither of which I said he had! Help!

Does not answer the question! Awful system this year.

@goaler - Is that in the Free version of TurboTax Online? Check what is selected in the Tax Profile, including any boxes you unchecked that might have sub boxes still checked.

I am having the same problem.  It keeps on asking me to Upgrade.  I do have banking interest, but not worth an upgrade.  I unchecked everything else, and my sale of stock was reported on a T-slip.

I had the same issue. I had originally answered yes to "Did you have income from investments, and had also selected Yes to the underlying question about "Interest income not reported on a slip".

It took  me a while to figure out that clicking No on the top level question did not reset the underlying answers to No. When I reset all of the underlying questions, I was able to proceed with Turbo Tax Standard.

I had the same issue as msalcioglu, but am still being asked to upgrade. I changed the top-level "did you have income from investments such as interest earned on investments" to No, then back to Yes, checked T5, and then answered No to all of the subsequent questions.

@TurboTaxClint, I am still having the same issue.  It says I have to upgrade because:

"You told us you have one or more of the following:
Sold stocks, bonds, mutual funds, real estate or other investment property.
Interest, dividend or partnership income not reported on a slip.
Sold an automobile, jewelry, art work or other listed personal property.
Sold your home, condo, cottage or apartment that was not exclusively for personal use.
Income and/or expenses from a rental property."

I only have income from investments that are reported on a T-Slip (a T5 and T5008).  Is the Standard  version no longer sufficient for this income? I also have sold a home that was my primary residence, so do not have to report it.   I have not interest, dividend or partnership income that is not reported on a slip, and selected "no" to this question.

On the Tax Profile summary, it says I have these:
Employment Income and Expenses
Interest, trust, dividend and partnership income and expenses

Why am I still being asked to upgrade to Premier?  I have been a long-time user of TurboTax and its predecessors and these changes are very frustrating.
