If you live in a community property state, the majority of property and income you acquire while married is considered as owned by both of you. This means that when you file separate tax returns you need to report half of all community income plus all of your separate income on your tax return. It’s much easier to file a joint return.

The definition of joint and separate property/income varies somewhat by state. IRS Publication 555, Table 1 has a general summary of what is and isn’t community property, but you need to look up your specific state's rules before you file your tax returns. For more information see the TurboTax article

I will try to make this as concise as possible.

I had multiple long term transactions and one short term transaction for crypto. I did the same for ALL long term transactions, I checked the "long term transaction with cost basis NOT reported to the IRS" option for all of them.

After submitting my taxes, I go to look at form 8949 and it's saying the long term transaction with the capital gains is a short term transaction. All the other transactions are correct.

There's code "MT" in the code section. I know what M means but I believe T is when it's incorrect.

I don't get what I did wrong here

Re: How do I prepare a return for a life estate sale, when my mom is still alive and I have about 82% remainderman value?

Have you owned the house and live there for the last 2 out of 5 years? If so, you can use the Section 121 exclusion of gain ($250,000/$500,000).

I'm assuming you didn't use the home as your primary residence though. In that case you report your share of the proceeds from the sale (less selling expenses) and need to figure out your basis. If you received the remainder as a gift, then your basis would be the lesser of your mother's adjusted basis or the fair market value on the date of the gift. The difference would be your gain of course.

Also, if this involved an enhanced life estate, which is legal in only few states, the remainder interest could be revoked and your mother assigned 100% of the gain on the sale.

The Form 1099-G you just received is likely for your 2023 state income tax refund which you received in 2024. While unemployment is reported on the same form (Box 1), tax refunds and credits are reported in Box 2.

Federal, state, and local governments are required to report certain payments, including tax refunds, to the IRS and to you. This form documents that you overpaid your state or local taxes in a previous year (likely 2023) and received that money back as a refund or credit in 2024.

If your state refund was redirected to pay a debt (like past-due child support or a prior tax bill), the full original refund amount is still reported here as if you had received it.

You have a problem. Filing Joint is one return for the both of you combined. You do not file your own return. You will have to amend her return to add your info.

You should not amend until the first return has fully processed and you get the first refund or your tax due payment has cleared. But first be sure to save a copy of your original return since the amended return will overwrite it.

You can find Amend under

Federal Taxes or Personal (for Home & Business)

Other Tax Situations

How to Amend this year

https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/tax-return/amend-federal-tax-return-current-year/L7eS6o1qh_US_en_US

Re: If my wife filed our taxes as married jointly, does that mean I have to do mine as well or no?

If your wife filed a Married Filing Jointly return, that single return covers both of you. You do not need to (and should not) file a separate individual return.

Both of your incomes, deductions, and credits are combined on a single Form 1040.

If she filed jointly but only included her income and left yours out, the return is incomplete. If that happened, you shouldn't file a new return; instead, you would need to amend the joint return she just filed to add your income.

Both spouses are legally required to sign a joint return (if filing electronically, this is usually done with a PIN or by verifying your prior-year income).

Re: Error Code 603- Activate - After Last Update

Hello and thanks for your suggestion - I had the umid present there and I tried your suggestion but unfortunately it still shows 3/3 activations used. The only difference was that my code was not pre-populated in its box so I had to insert it there and after it came back with the same Error 603.

It seems that last update and its forced activation has used all activations !! but not no. of computer installations !!! How is this possible ?

I don't understand why are we forced for 3 activations - my understanding was that we can install on 3 computers and have 8 returns to complete ! This is what I paid for ... not for a limited no. of activations while I haven't exceeded neither no. of computers nor no. of returns !!

Any other idea how to fix this - time flies and CRA deadline will come soon ? Thanks in advance.

Re: I thought that you can deduct cash donations to charity even if taking standard deduction. But Turbo Tax is saying I can't

TurboTax is correct. That charity donation deduction goes into effect for your 2026 tax return that you will file next year. For 2025, a charity donation goes on Schedule A with your other itemized deductions.
