Spouse SSN Filing Issue

Hello,

My spouse is a Canadian citizen and does not have a SSN or an ITIN. I hired someone to prepare my U.S. tax return, and they are using TurboTax. They have advised me that because she does not have an SSN or ITIN, my only option is to file my return by mail. Could you please confirm whether this is correct?

Additionally, if we are filing separately, do I need to report my spouse’s income on my U.S. tax return?

Finally, the person preparing my return entered my spouse’s Canadian Social Insurance Number (SIN) in all fields requesting her SSN. Is this appropriate, or should those fields be left blank instead?

Thank you.

Here is a great TurboTax FAQ that gives you instructions on how to find out if your income tax return was accepted by the CRA.

What do I do?

Re: How many years back do I have to consider to calculate my net regular contributions to my ROT...

401k's and other workplace plans are irrelevant to this issue. IRAs are not the same as workplace plans. IRAs are covered by different laws and are accounted for separately. If you have an excess contribution to a workplace plan, that needs to be handled in the year it occurs, and any issues resulting from not correcting the problem would be handled separately from any issues relating to IRAs.

If a taxpayer makes non-deductible contributions to a traditional IRA, they must include form 8606 with their return when they file for the year. The taxpayer must keep that form 8606 for their entire life, not just the 3-6 years usually advised for tax papers. Any year that you make additional new non-deductible contributions to a traditional IRA, you will take information from the old form 8606 (no matter how old), add the new information, and generate an updated 8606 (which you then must keep forever, or until you generate another new form 8606). When you withdraw, that also requires the old form 8606 and generates a new form 8606. If you don't document your non-deductible contributions on form 8606, you don't get the tax-free withdrawal treatment when you withdraw.

So if you are over age 59-1/2, Turbotax basically needs to know, for Roth IRAs, has the IRA been open at least 5 years. For traditional IRAs, Turbotax needs to know if you ever made non-deductible contributions and if you have a form 8606 to prove it. If you are over age 73, Turbotax will also need to know if your withdrawals over the year were equal or more than your RMD.

How you receive your Federal refund depends on what you initially chose. If you chose to pay any TurboTax products fees out of your refund, or if you chose the "up to 5 days early" offer, your refund will go first to an intermediary bank once the IRS releases the funds. If you did not use any option that requires a third-party bank, then the IRS would send it directly to your bank (or card.)

If you have successfully completed identity verification, the IRS says to wait 2-3 weeks to check the IRS "Where's My Refund" tool at

https://www.irs.gov/refunds

but it can take the IRS up to 4-9 weeks for the IRS to finish processing the return after the identity verification process.

Federal and state refunds come from completely separate entities. There is no rule as to which one will come in first or how long it will be between their arrival in your account.

TurboTax gives you an estimated date for receiving your refund based on a 21 day average from your date of acceptance, but it can take longer. “21 days” is not a promise from TurboTax or the IRS.

First, check your e-file status to see if your return was accepted:

https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tools/efile-status-lookup/

Once your federal return has been accepted by the IRS, only the IRS has any control. TurboTax does not receive any updates from the IRS. Your ONLY source of information about your refund now is the IRS.

You need your filing status, your Social Security number and the exact amount (line 35a of your 2025 Form 1040) of your federal refund to track your Federal refund:

https://www.irs.gov/refunds

To track your state refund:

https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/tax-refund/track-state-refund/L3jgO8PGs_US_en_US?uid=lt447ebr

If you chose to have your TurboTax fees deducted from your federal refund, that will take some extra time, while the third party bank handles the refund processing

Note: “Accepted” is not the same as “approved”. TurboTax tells you the e-file was accepted if the IRS deems that there is enough information on the return for them to take it in for processing. Only the IRS can approve of the refund, which is a later stage of processing. If the IRS approves your refund they will provide a date for the refund to be issued.

FROM THE IRS WHERE’S MY REFUND SITE:

https://www.irs.gov/wheres-my-refund

How it works

Where's My Refund shows your refund status:

Return Received – We received your return and are processing it.

Refund Approved – We approved your refund and are preparing to issue it by the date shown.

Refund Sent – We sent the refund to your bank or to you in the mail. It may take 5 days for it to show in your bank account or several weeks for your check to arrive in the mail.

The TurboTax Free online edition is for very simple tax returns that do not require any other form or schedule other than the Form 1040. If your tax data requires entry on any other form or schedule then you must upgrade to the Deluxe edition or higher.

If you have not paid for the online edition you are using, have not filed your tax return or registered the Free edition, then you can clear your return and start over with a lower priced edition. Click on Switch Products on the lower left side of the program screen while working on the 2025 online tax return. Click on Clear & Start Over

Go to this TurboTax website for the Free online edition - https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/online/free-edition.jsp

Please Note -

TurboTax Online: Important Details about Filing Form 1040 Returns with Limited Credits

A Form 1040 return with limited credits is one that's filed using IRS Form 1040 only (with the exception of the specific covered situations described below). Roughly 37% of taxpayers are eligible.

If you have a Form 1040 return and are claiming limited credits only, you can file for free yourself with TurboTax Free Edition or TurboTax Live Assisted Basic (if available), or you can file with TurboTax Full Service at the listed price.

Situations covered (assuming no added tax complexity):

W-2 income

Interest or dividends (1099-INT/1099-DIV) that don’t require filing a Schedule B

IRS standard deduction

Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC)

Child Tax Credit (CTC)

Student loan interest deduction

Situations not covered:

Itemized deductions claimed on Schedule A

Unemployment income reported on a 1099-G

Business or 1099-NEC income

Stock sales (including crypto investments)

Rental property income

Credits, deductions and income reported on other forms or schedules
