Yes, you can file an income tax return if you had no income and paid rent or had rental income only. Can you please clarify if you owned property that you were renting out or did you rent a place?

Whoever owns the building must claim it. If you both own it, then you can split it 50/50. Unfortunately, we can't tell you who it will benefit without seeing your return. You can always enter it on one to see the outcome, then add the 50% to see which one makes more sense for you on how to claim it.

Are you paying property tax on your home or a home you are renting out? If you own your own home and are not self-employed, you will only enter the property tax paid in the provincial section of your return. Once it asks if you are claiming the grocery rebate/GST/HST tax credit or the Trillium and you say yes, then the next page should ask for your address and how many months you lived there; that asks how much you paid. You will enter your property tax amount, and below will be a drop-down arrow, and you will choose "Property Tax" instead of "rent."
