You don't need to enter any amounts that they were reimbursed for. If they had other employment expenses that they were required to incur by their employer that weren't reimbursed, then you can enter them in the Employment Expenses section.

Hi Everyone,

I’m trying to help a friend with their taxes. Usually I can figure these things out but this one has me puzzled. I have entered her T4 and Releve slip. She works for Canada Post and also received a form for expenses.

She pays for her own fuel and gets reimbursed per km travelled. The form is called Declaration of conditions of employment. It is checked that her contract requires her to pay their own expenses. Then in the next section, motor vehicle travel and other expenses in part 8 it shows the rate per km and then the amount given.

I started to enter it but am not sure how to do it. It seems like it should be easy but there are so many sections I’m not sure exactly what to do m

I’m hoping there’s a simple answer that someone can point me to.

thanks for the help

As per Revenu Québec, the person receiving care must have a severe and prolonged impairment in mental or physical functions because of which they need assistance in carrying out a basic activity of daily living, as certified by a health professional.

TurboTax will not allow the Caregiver Tax Credit for Quebec returns for spouses of individuals who do not declare a disability. In addition, the Quebec return it will not allow for the individual with a disability not to declare the disability tax credit (i.e. transfer the credit to a daughter) unless they declare that they are not disabled. If you declared that you are disabled this does not allow your spouse to declare a Caregiver tax credit. I seem to be stuck in an endless loop.

Unfortunately, even though it says "if applicable," Revenue Québec requires this number. To get past this section, enter 6 zeros only, no more, no less. The software cannot allow this situation to be netfiled, as Revenue Québec has this error in place, and you will be blocked from Net filing.

You will need to print and mail your return to Revenue Québec.

I have the same problem, and can't NetFile Quebec. I'm getting the same error, but the day camp was in Ontario and I don't have a SIN or identification number. The field (for box H) in the RL-24 form says "Québec Identification Number (if applicable)", but I'm not allowed to finish with the screen unless I fill in the box, even though I'm only supposed to enter it "if applicable". Revenu Quebec's website says "Your childcare provider must give you an RL-24 slip to justify the childcare expenses you paid. Receipts are no longer accepted, except in certain cases (e.g. you paid a childcare provider outside Québec)." I'm in that certain case where a receipt would be accepted, but I'm still getting an error. Can this please be fixed?

I tried to enter 0's, and that enabled me to finish with the screen, but I got an error and was unable to NetFile Quebec the returns.

My son and I just stepped through a brand new return, and paid another fee to file. We correctly entered the RL8 information but were never prompted to explicitly fill out additional information specific to Schedule S. We were unable to tell what forms TurboTax was or was not creating until we paid. At that point TurboTax generated a fresh round of forms - we again got a Schedule T but no Schedule S. I'm holding off complete my return because it's asking for Schedule S information. Very confused as to what's going on. As we were stepping through this new return, we were looking at the detailed Quebec summary to see if it provided any indication as to what is happening with the tuition transfer, but saw no reference to tuition transfer. I'm an experienced TurboTax user (home and office). This should not be so difficult LOL.

Go to your Tax profile first, and you'll find a section where you can check RL-1. In the Q&A section they say to Add a T4A pension and then go to R1. This does not work for me.

Thanks for confirming my reasoning. I heard that medical expenses were one of the most commonly missed deductions. Wish Turbotax would encourage everyone to enter all their medical expenses instead of emphasizing the 3% threshold based on receipts and the "optimun 12 month period". At least for Quebec taxpayers the prompts are misleading and might discourage people from claiming medical expenses.

Your assessment of Quebec's medical expense logic is spot on. While it may seem counterintuitive to enter small receipts when the software keeps telling you that you haven't met the 3% threshold, the "invisible" amount in RL-1 Box J alters the math behind the scenes.

You are correct in that you should not manually enter the Box J amount in the "Medical Expenses" section. TurboTax is set up to automatically pull that value from your RL-1 entry and add it to your medical expense total for Quebec (schedule B).

We appreciate your input.

Thank you for choosing TurboTax.

QPP2 contribution without QPP

I work for the federal government and my place of work changed partway through the year from ON to QC, so they issued 2 different T4s. The first one, from ON, includes the maximum CPP contribution and part of CPP2. After my place of work changed to QC, I paid the balance of my additional contribution to QPP2. So the QC T4 and its associated RL1 show a QPP2 contribution with no QPP contribution. This is not an error; it is exactly as it should be.

The software however treats it as an error and will not let me enter QPP2 without QPP. After a full hour on the phone with your tech support, I received this: "This is not a software issue, because if you have a 2nd contribution (box 16A/17A), you should logically have a 1st contribution (box 16/17). Technically, both amount should be on the same T4. If the last version of your T4 on your CRA My Account is not with box 16/17 and box 16A/17A on the same slip, we suggest you to contact CRA to see if you can combine both T4s together to have only 1 but with all the amount reflecting your tax year."

This demonstrates a troubling misunderstanding of the tax rules. And i cannot combine the two slips, because the province of work in box 10 is different. The software needs to be modified to allow for this situation.

Medical Expense Tip for Quebec

Just a tip for Quebec Residents:

Turbo Tax always tells me that my medical expenses must exceed a certain threshold (3% of family income) before qualifying for a deduction. It is always a good idea to enter medical expenses even if they are nowhere near the 3%. I have been surprised that even $100 of medical expense results in a small credit on Quebec taxes. The reason is that in Quebec Employer Paid private medical plan fees are taxable by Revenu Quebec but the amount can also be claimed as a deduction and it counts toward the 3% threshold. A good employer paid medical plan can cost $2000 per year and that covers the 3% of $65,000 income. The amount appears on the RL-1 form (Item J) and Turbo tax automatically calculates the credit but we have to ignore the messages about not exceeding the 3% (because the amount should not be entered as a receipt if it is already on the RL-1).

Unless you received the Relevé 27 for a business, or for a medical expense, you don't need to enter it on your tax return.
