Lock icons force you to upgrade the Turbo Tax format you've chosen to a more detailed more expensive product. This is unnecessary if the statement does not apply.

In TurboTax Online, that lock icon usually appears because the software has "unlocked" specific forms based on your initial profile answers or because you've reached a stage where that data is being used for calculations. To remove it and clear the incorrectly checked statement, follow these steps:

Revisit the "Setting Up" or "Profile" section. The most direct way to remove a section is to go back to the source. Use the "Find" option or the left side menu and select "Tax Profile" or "Setting Up." Locate the specific question you checked by mistake (for example, "Did you own foreign property?") and uncheck the box. Usually, when you click "Continue" at the bottom of that page, the software will ask for confirmation to delete the associated forms, which removes the lock icon from your summary.

If the lock icon is stuck due to a browser glitch and you haven't paid for the return yet, you can use the Clear and Start Over feature found under the File or Settings Up menu. Most of the time, simply navigating back to the Tax Profile and unchecking the original trigger question is enough to make the icon disappear.

Note: If your product is already upgraded, you cannot downgrade it; you would need to start over with your return.
