Can I claim moving expenses if I am relocating 300km for the same employer? and my spouse is starting a new job?

As long as your new residence is at least 40km closer to your new work location than your old residence, then you are able to claim moving expenses.  If your new residence is at least 40km closer to your spouse's new job location than your old home, then she may be able to claim as well.  However you can not double the claim...whatever the amount you can claim, one spouse or the other can claim, or the amount can be split between the two of you.  If one of you has a higher income than the other, then that is the person who would best benefit.

As you are moving work locations for your current employer, you will also need a letter from your employer stating that they required you to move and that they did not reimburse you at all for the cost of the move.

Can I claim moving expenses if I am relocating 300km for the same employer? and my spouse is starting a new job?

Hi, thank you for using Intuit turbotax Live Community

The requirement is start work in a new location or what the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) calls an eligible relocation. This definition does not mention that it must be a new employer just a new location to start work.  CRA has information at the following link.

https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/individuals/topics/about-your-tax-return/tax-re...

Review the link above and if you have further questions regarding the claim or the documentation required please contact the CRA

TurboTax also has a great article with moving expense information:

Hope this helps
