ending CPP on self-employment

I understand that to end contributing to CPP I need to fill out Schedule 8, part 1.

I have been told that I should have done this for 2023 tax year, in order to have it applied to the 2024 year. But my husband and I both had our birthdays near the Christmas/New Year holidays; so we are okay with having this start in January 2024.

In Part 2 there is automatically 12 entered for the number of months that CPP applies to 2024.  I would have to override to change it to 1, and not be able to NetFile.

In part 4 the calculations are for the full 12 months, and that is not correct.

I do not want to send CRA the amount that shows up owing on our T1 General, because getting a refund from them is next to impossible.

Question:  Where do I make changes so that the Schedule only calculates for 1 month, not 12?

I don't know if this is a glitch or if I need to enter information on another page

@LJE58 Have you gone to the INFOWS worksheet and entered the month you stopped on the bottom of page 2?

Can you please let us know why you want it to calculate for 1 month and not 12? If you were starting in January of 2025, then there are no months to enter, as it doesn't apply to tax year 2024.

If we are misunderstanding, please let us know so that we can assist further.

Thank you for choosing TurboTax.

In part one, there should be a box to elect to stop contributing to CPP. You would use 02 for the start date. You must be age 65 or older to elect to stop CPP.

Because my husband's birthday was January, we will allow CPP for that month to be deducted, but not the rest of the year.  He turned 65 in 2024; I did in December of 2023.

@LJE58 If you are filing for Tax Year 2023, If you were starting in January of 2024, then there are no months to enter, as it doesn't apply to tax year 2023.

We are filing 2024 taxes; and I have not previously marked the box to discontinue contributing to CPP (for year 2023 or prior, altho I could have due to my December birthday).  Our 2024 tax filing would be the first time we want to check off the box to stop contributing, but the problem is that further down the page, it shows 12 months to be calculated for contributions to CPP...overriding this number means no Net filing. Does TurboTax have a glitch?  Where do I enter our January (01) 2024 as the month to stop contributing?

So far no one has addressed the issue with TurboTax.

Did you fill out CPT30 from? Are all the conditions met? Enter the amount that you have on your T-Slip and select the exempt CPP box and for more detail what you should enter regarding CPP contribution just for a month ,please contact CRA directly for further clarification.

The self-employment worker uses Schedule 8 for CPP, not CPT30.

Any advice on how to correctly fill out Schedule 8 would be appreciated

You need to fill in part 2 on the schedule 8, choose the box to elect to stop paying CPP and choose the month, 02, 03 , 04 etc.  for the month following your birthday.  If it was prior to or in January, you will need to choose 02 for the month the election starts.

I can not in TurboTax change the number in box A in part 2 from 12 to 2; if would be an override and thus make it impossible to Netfile. Can you suggest how I can get the number changed?

You have to be between ages 65 and 70. The actual election to stop CPP and the month that it begins is in part 1.  Part 2 determines how many months CPP applies.

yes, it comes from somewhere else and is locked.  if i override, i cant netfile.  is that the only way turbotax works?
