My mother as died a few weeks back. How do I proceed to file her 2024 taxes? Do I need to wait until February 2025?

Hello,

I am so sorry for your loss! Navigating taxes can be tough specifically when dealing with the death of a loved one.

If your mother passed after December 31st, her terminal return (i.e. final return) would be due by April 30th, 2025.

CRA and the TurboTax team is still hard at work developing and creating the 2024 tax forms needed to file taxes correctly and accurately and will be available as early as December 2024.

Please let me know if you have any more questions.

Take care!

Hi there.

I'm very sorry for your loss.

In short, yes, you can file your mother's 2024 tax return early. However, you will have to follow the CRA's instructions for preparing tax returns for someone who died. See this page for more information: https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/individuals/life-events/doing-taxes-someone-died/prepare-returns.html

Please note, only the deceased's legal representative can file their final tax return. You can find information about who can be the deceased's legal representative and what is required of that person here: https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/individuals/life-events/doing-taxes-someone-died/represent-deceased.html

I very much hope that this helps.
