Can you please be more specific?  Are these expenses related to your employment?

we had to buy another car because the job required you to get to other locations far away. So there is car payments, gas and car upkeep. Can I claim?

Only if you are required by your employer to use your vehicle for employment purposes and they issue you a completed and signed T2220 - Declarations of Conditions of Employment form, can you claim these costs under "Employment Expenses" (found in the Income Section of TurboTax).

There are some rules when claiming Employment Expenses for your vehicle:

  • You must keep a vehicle log of all kms used by this vehicle for both Employment and Personal use.
  • You cannot claim kms for travelling to and from your home to place of employment.
  • Special rules apply if your employer reimburses for the use of your vehicle (ie: gives you a vehicle allowance or reimburses for receipts you submit)
  • You must have receipts for your fuel, maintenance & repair, insurance, etc. You cannot simply claim a "per km rate".
