I want to applied a joint election to split pension income with my wife for 2018. should we file jointly as a one return. Thanks

You and your spouse will "prepare" your tax returns together, as a couple. Each tax return is filed individually, but in order to get all the credits and benefits you are entitled to, you prepare them at the same time.
When asked when you begin your tax return, "do you want to prepare your spouse's return at the same time?", you must answer "yes".
