If my mother lives with us and financially contributes more than her share of the expenses (because she can afford it), is the surplus contribution "income" or a "gift"?

Your mother is financially contributing to pay for expenses, this will be considered more of a gift instead of income.                                                    

According to this TurboTax post, your mother can give as much money with not being taxable as income.
