For your Jan-Mar contributions - If these contributions have not been included on your 2016 return, you will need to file an adjustment to that return in order to claim the amounts. You can choose to apply the deduction to your 2016 return or choose to simply declare the amounts and keep them as "unused" for 2017 or future years.

For the "unclaimed" amounts. Because you've indicated that you've received a CRA notice of these amounts, is it safe to say that these contributions were included in your 2016 return but no deduction was taken? If that's the case, you may deduct those amounts this year (or in future years).

If this is not the case, please post more details.
